The International Securities Exchange (ISE) today reported average daily volume of 4.2 million contracts in April 2009.
Average daily trading volume for all options contracts increased 3.5% to 4.2 million contracts in April as compared to 4.0 million contracts during the same period in 2008. Total options volume for the month decreased 1.2% to 87.8 million contracts from 88.9 million contracts in the same year-ago period.
On a year-to-date basis, average daily trading volume of all options decreased 4.1% to 4.0 million contracts traded as compared to 4.2 million contracts traded in the prior year. Total year-to-date options volume through April 2009 decreased 5.3% to 330.3 million contracts from 348.7 million contracts in the same period last year.

ISE's market share statistics continue to be negatively impacted by trading strategies that are permitted based on a non-economic rationale. These strategies include dividend trades and synthetic short interest trades. These trades temporarily inflate and distort trading volume and market share when transacted.
Monthly Highlights
- On April 24, 2009, ISE traded its four billionth options contract.
- On April 27, 2009, ISE announced that it has eliminated customer transaction fees for Premium Products, which include multiply-listed exchange-traded fund (ETF) and index options. This fee change, which is effective May 1, 2009, excludes ISE FX Options and ISE proprietary index options.
- On April 28, 2009, ISE announced that Michael T. Juneman was elected to its Board of Directors, representing ISE's Primary Market Makers (PMMs). Mr. Juneman is currently Head of U.S. Options Exchanges at Citadel Derivatives Group LLC, a position he has held since 2005.
- ISE traded more volume than any other options exchange in 1,178 of 2,050 issues in its listings.
